The Gift of Winter Stillness — Why Going Inward Is the Most Spiritual Thing You Can Do

There is a quiet wisdom to winter that we so often resist.

We are creatures of light and movement, and when the days grow shorter and the cold asks us to slow down, something in us fights it. We fill the gaps with noise, with lists, with busyness — anything to avoid sitting with the stillness. But what if that stillness wasn't something to escape? What if it was, in fact, an invitation?

This winter, I want to gently offer you another way to see this season: not as something to push through, but as one of the most sacred opportunities for soul work that the year has to offer.

The Earth Knows Something We've Forgotten

Watch the trees in winter. They don't apologise for shedding their leaves. They don't rush the bare months or pretend they are something they aren't. They simply rest — deeply, fully — trusting that spring will come and that the roots are quietly doing their work underground.

You are no different.

When you feel called to retreat, to rest more, to speak less and listen more to what stirs within you — that isn't weakness. That is wisdom. That is your soul asking for the conditions it needs to grow.

Going Inward Is a Practice, Not a Luxury

Spiritual awareness doesn't always arrive in a dramatic flash of light. More often, it comes in the quiet moments — the early morning cup of tea held in both hands, the pause before sleep, the few minutes with your journal when the house is finally still.

These are not wasted moments. These are sacred ones.

In winter, the veil between our everyday mind and our deeper knowing feels thinner. Dreams become more vivid. Old patterns surface asking to be seen. Questions we've buried rise quietly to the surface. This is the season that asks us: What are you carrying that no longer belongs to you? What is ready to be released?

A Simple Winter Practice to Try This Week

Find a moment — just five or ten minutes — somewhere warm and quiet. Light a candle if you have one. Place your hand on your heart and take three slow breaths.

Then ask yourself, gently and without judgment: What does my soul most need right now?

Write whatever comes. Don't edit it. Don't analyse it yet. Just let it be there on the page, seen and heard.

That act alone — the act of listening to yourself — is one of the most profoundly spiritual things you can do.

You Are Allowed to Rest

As women, we so rarely give ourselves permission to simply be still. We equate our worth with our output, our love with our labour. But you are not a machine. You are a living, breathing soul on a deeply human journey — and that journey needs space to breathe.

This winter, let stillness be your teacher. Let the quiet be your guide. And trust — as the dragonfly trusts the water it hovers above — that you are held, you are guided, and you are exactly where you need to be.

🌙 Rest deeply. Reflect gently. Rise, when the season calls.
